Support before, during
and after bariatric surgery

If you decide to have bariatric surgery at Hendrick Health, you will have a partner for life to help you on every step of your journey to better health.

Here’s what you can expect from our caring team.

Before you have surgery

Having weight loss surgery can improve your life and health. But it’s a big choice. To make sure you’re ready, we’ll meet with you to discuss your procedure. We’ll talk about its benefits and risks. And we’ll teach you how to prepare. As part of that, you’ll have:

  • A physical exam and tests to check your health.

  • A referral visit with a psychologist (usually via phone or video call) to make sure you’re emotionally ready for surgery and the changes you’ll need to make.

  • Support to help you quit smoking, if needed.

  • Visits with our dietitians. They’ll teach you about diet changes you’ll need to make before and after surgery.

Our bariatric nurse navigator will walk you through all your pre-surgery visits. They will also answer any questions you have.

While you’re in the hospital

Our fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon will perform your procedure at Hendrick Medical Center South. Our hospital is state-of-the-art and has everything needed to perform your surgery in a minimally invasive way.

Some people go home the same day. Others stay a night or two in our bariatric unit. We designed this space with your comfort and safety in mind.

No matter how long you stay with us, our nurses will prepare you to safely leave the unit when it’s time to go home.

After bariatric surgery

Our team will keep supporting you in the months and years after surgery. You can expect:

Follow-up care. Regular follow-up care will help us make sure you are doing well and losing weight as expected. We’ll see you often in the first year. After that, you’ll have annual or bi-annual checkups. All your visits will take place right here in Abilene.

Nutritional support. Choosing the right foods after bariatric surgery is key. Our team is here to help you. We’ll give you an eating plan that fits your lifestyle and tastes.

Support from other patients. We offer a support group where you can get helpful tips and meet others who have had bariatric surgery.  Our support group is all about informing you and cheering you on!
