SADI-S and Duodenal Switch

Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is the latest weight loss surgery to be embraced by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons.

This surgery is similar to a standard duodenal switch. Both combine sleeve gastrectomy with intestinal bypass to help you lose weight and improve your health.

The procedure

Surgeons typically perform both SADI-S and duodenal switch through small cuts in the belly. This helps limit pain and speed up recovery after surgery.  Here are the basic steps:

  • Surgeons take out part of the stomach, leaving a tube-like pouch. This is the same first step as in a sleeve gastrectomy .

  • The first part of the small intestine (duodenum) is divided just after the stomach. The surgeon brings up a loop of the lower small intestine and connects it to the exit of the new stomach. This lets food bypass part of the small intestine.

The standard duodenal switch is similar. However, it creates two connections with the bowels, instead of one. This procedure is not as simple to perform as SADI-S.

How SADI-S and duodenal switch help you lose weight

To help you lose weight, these surgeries:

  • Make the stomach smaller so that you eat less at one time.

  • Reduce hunger hormones in the gut and helps you feel full.

  • Restrict how many calories you absorb when you eat.

As with any weight loss surgery, you will need to make lifelong changes in your diet to ensure success after either procedure.

More than weight loss

Both the SADI-S and a standard duodenal switch can help with blood sugar control. And both can help reverse type 2 diabetes in people who have severe obesity.
