Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) is a surgery that helps cause weight loss by removing a large portion of the stomach.
The procedure
Gastric sleeve is performed through small incisions in the belly. This helps limit pain and reduce recovery time after surgery.
During surgery, the stomach is stapled to make it smaller. Up to 80% of the stomach is removed. What’s left is long and narrow, like a banana.
Because only the stomach is altered, gastric sleeve is a simple surgery, compared to other weight loss procedures like roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The surgery is very safe. But like most surgery, it is permanent.
How sleeve gastrectomy helps you lose weight
You eat less. The new stomach is smaller and holds less food.
You aren’t as hungry. Gastric sleeve removes part of the stomach that secretes most of the hormones that make you feel hungry. This reduces your appetite.
